Sustainable events come in all shapes and sizes, from large convention centers to corporate incentive events. In building our efforts to create more sustainable events across the board, the MeetGreen team traveled to Park City, Utah, to conduct a Sustainable Events Workshop. We shared our best practices and industry knowledge with local event organizers.

Park City Sustainable Events Workshop

Organized through the Park City Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau, the sustainable events planning workshop was created in collaboration with MeetGreen. We focused on:

  • Learning what initial perceptions of sustainable events participants had
  • What roadblocks stood in the way of progress
  • What local resources and organizations could assist in making their efforts more applicable

With the MeetGreen sustainability team leading the conversation, the group discussed:

  • Benefits of integrating critical principles into their events
  • Topics they thought they could influence the most

Local Leaders & Sustainability

During the workshop local leaders who have strong ties to the community shared insights on sustainability in Park City.
Morgan Mingle, the workshop’s orchestrator, shared some of the city’s long-term goals, while Jocelyn Scudder from the Park City Summit County Arts Council highlighted the wealth of talent and local artisans who can provide unique touches for events.

Waste Management’s Perspective

Tim Loveday and Troy Holding from Summit County Solid Waste Division and Recycle Utah shared their perspectives on waste management.

E-bike Tour of the City

We enjoyed a plant-forward lunch, hopped on the Summit Bike Share e-bikes as a group, and rode into town. On our road trip, we visited two local organizations leading in sustainable development to learn more about sustainability in Park City.

Recycle Utah Tour

The first stop was the operation at Recycle Utah, where Troy showcased the organization’s ability to recycle and process multiple streams unconventional to roadside pickup. We saw stacks of:

  • Bike tires
  • Styrofoam
  • Cardboard boxes
  • Compostable food waste

The group biked to the Christian Center of Park City (CCPC) Food Pantry. We watched food donations happen as Matt Melville, the team’s Director of Programs, shared ways for event organizers to help support the organization and people in need of food.

Workshop Wrap Up

As the workshop wrapped up with some group brainstorming activities related to waste management and transportation, event organizers left with the following:

  • Up-to-date knowledge of best practices
  • An invigorated spirit
  • Opportunities for local collaboration

MeetGreen is excited to continue sharing more ways to advance their events to new heights!
